ghent, belgium

Ghent is one of Belgium’s most striking medieval cities, especially for lovers of Gothic architecture. Once one of the wealthiest cities in Europe, Ghent’s medieval power still shows in its soaring churches, stone guild houses, and dramatic canal-side skyline.
That atmosphere is anchored by Gravensteen Castle, a 12th-century fortress rising straight out of the city center. Few places in Belgium feel more medieval than standing beneath its stone walls in the heart of a modern city.
Ghent is also a dream for beer lovers. The city is packed with beer cafés—from classic brown bars to lively, student-filled pubs—making it easy to wander, explore, and settle in for “just one more.”
Our Ghent City Guide is more limited than some of our others, simply because we haven’t spent as much time here—yet. Most spots listed are places we’ve personally visited, with a few trusted recommendations we’re excited to explore ourselves.
Click here to open our interactive Google Map of Ghent. Use it to plan ahead—or pull it up while you’re already in town, wandering between castles, canals, and cafés.
