amsterdam
We lived in Amsterdam from February 2023 until February 2024 so we had plenty of time to put together an extensive list of recommendations in six different categories.
Brown BarsThe Netherlands version of a traditional local pub, brown bars are known for great bar snacks (bitterballen!), dark wood interiors, and a super cozy atmosphere. Try some local jenever, a kopstoot (a shot of jenever with a glass of beer), or a local beer. Gezellig!

favorite barsDelicious cocktails, local jenever, lovely wines, and favorite beer spots- here's our list of non-brown bars to check out
|
activitiesThere are the well-known activities, like the Rijksmuseum, canal cruises, and the Anne Frank House- and they're 100% worth it!
We also include some lesser-known options, including our favorite tour companies and tours, comedy, shops, and more. |
eats & treatsThe number of restaurants in Amsterdam can be overwhelming and most are mediocre and overpriced at best- designed only to capture tourist traffic.
So here's our list to help narrow it down and ensure you enjoy some delicious eats! |
drinkable TerracesOr as the Dutch say, terrasjes! Our favorite terraces combine great views, great bar snacks, and great drinks.

De PijpOne of Amsterdam's hippest neighborhoods, De Pijp is well worth a visit. Fresh stroopwafels at the Albert Cuyp market and plenty of great restaurants and cafes, it's easy to eat and drink your way through this fun neighborhood.
